The housing crisis and building better

The on-going UK housing crisis has driven the UK Government to consider radical ways to increase output and quality of new homes, whilst driving up productivity, reducing emissions and, critically, addressing cost. This ‘presumption in favour of offsite’ is creating a housing revolution that is great in principle, but the policy and market are far ahead of the sector's ability to change how it specifies and procures for a manufactured product.

It is even more complex in the social housing sector, where the desire to build more can be frustrated by access to finance and the right expertise.

SD21 can provide trusted advice to local authorities, Registered Providers and other development professionals who wish to deliver better homes that resolve all the complex requirements of our times: high performance, speed, quality, comfort and safety, flexible and adaptable, low carbon, cheap to run and of course, genuinely affordable to build.

The SD21 team has worked extensively across the value chains in a variety of roles and capacities to enable more offsite housing development including:

  • Offsite strategy development

  • Working with local authorities, housing associations and private developers  to engage and upskill their development teams for offsite design and procurement

  • Partnership development with funders, design teams, manufacturers and contractors

  • Skill and capacity-building in local authority areas

  • Assisting offsite manufacturers to better position and market their proposition and win business

  • Demand aggregation

  • Extensive links throughout the value chain including Government, LA and RPs

  • County-wide strategy to assess offsite factory potential and route to market
